Essential Job Functions for a Portable (traveling) Plant Foreman
Location: Northern Arizona, with travel to parts of Nevada as
needed. About the Role We are seeking a dedicated and experienced
Portable Plant Foreman to lead our rock crushing and screening
operations. In this critical leadership role, you will be
responsible for the overall management and supervision of a mobile
crushing plant and a crew of 3-4 team members. This position is
ideal for a candidate who meets production targets but is looking
to develop their skills in personnel and equipment management. The
ideal candidate has proven leadership potential, a commitment to
safety, and strong technical expertise. This role serves as the
primary on-site liaison with management and clients and offers a
clear path for growth toward becoming an independent and highly
effective supervisor. Core Duties: Operation of Crushing and
Screening Equipment: Operates and monitors portable rock crushing
and screening plants, including jaw crushers, cone crushers, impact
crushers, screens, conveyors, and related equipment. Adjusts
equipment settings to achieve desired product size and quality.
Material Handling: Loads and unloads materials using appropriate
equipment (e.g., front-end loaders, excavators). Ensures proper
material flow through the crushing and screening process. Manages
stockpiles and ensures proper segregation of different rock types
and sizes. Maintenance and Repair: Performs routine maintenance on
crushing and screening equipment, including lubrication, cleaning,
and inspection. Identifies and reports mechanical problems. Assists
with repairs as needed. Performs pre-shift and post-shift
inspections. Safety Compliance: Adheres to all company and MSHA
(Mine Safety and Health Administration) safety regulations and
procedures. Conducts pre-operational checks of equipment and work
areas. Participates in safety meetings and training programs.
Promotes a safe working environment for themselves and others.
Quality Control: Monitors the quality of the crushed and screened
rock products. Conducts regular inspections and tests to ensure
compliance with customer specifications. Makes adjustments to
equipment as needed to maintain quality standards. Troubleshooting:
Identifies and troubleshoots problems with crushing and screening
equipment. Diagnoses mechanical and electrical issues and
implements appropriate solutions. Record Keeping: Maintains
accurate records of production, maintenance activities, and
equipment performance. Completes daily reports and logs as
required. Teamwork: Works collaboratively with other crew members,
including other Portable Plant Operators, equipment operators, and
laborers. Communicate effectively with supervisors and other
personnel. Environmental Compliance: Follows environmental
regulations related to dust control, noise levels, and waste
disposal. Takes measures to minimize environmental impact. Site
Preparation and Cleanup: Assists with site preparation and cleanup
activities, including clearing debris, leveling ground, and
maintaining a clean and organized work area. Additional Duties (May
Include): Operating mobile equipment (loaders, excavators, etc.)
Performing welding or fabrication tasks. Coordinate the Ordering or
parts and supplies with purchasing. Training new employees.
Physical Demands: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
regularly. Ability to stand, walk, bend, and stoop for extended
periods. Ability to work in various weather conditions, including
heat, cold, and rain. Ability to work in a noisy and dusty
environment. Ability to climb ladders and stairs. Ability to work
at heights. Required Skills and Experience: Proven experience
operating portable crushing and screening plants. Knowledge of
different types of crushers, screens, and conveyors. Understanding
of material flow and aggregate processing. Ability to read and
interpret equipment manuals and schematics. Strong mechanical
aptitude and troubleshooting skills. Knowledge of safety
regulations and procedures (MSHA). Excellent communication and
teamwork skills. Key Focus: Developing Leadership and Supervisory
Skills While Forman II successfully meets production targets, their
role requires further development in managing personnel and
equipment. This might involve mentorship from a supervisor,
attending leadership development programs, or taking on more
responsibility in assigning tasks and coaching crew members. By
focusing on these areas, a Forman II can transition towards
becoming a more independent and effective supervisor. Requirements
Qualifications & Experience High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in portable crushing and
screening operations, with a proven track record in leadership or
supervisory role. Comprehensive knowledge of portable plant
equipment and heavy equipment maintenance. Thorough understanding
of MSHA safety regulations and procedures. Rock crushing experience
is a must. Excellent leadership, team management, and
problem-solving skills. Strong organizational, communication, and
interpersonal skills. Ability to read and interpret blueprints,
technical drawings, and equipment manuals. Proficiency in basic
computer applications for reporting and record-keeping. Physical
ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Must have a
valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Willingness to
work flexible hours, including overtime and weekends as required.
Willingness to travel within as production requirements
dictate.
