Job Description:
Description POSITION DESCRIPTION: The cashier performs all
point-of-sale functions, including recording and collecting for
customer purchases. He/she keeps accurate records of all cash,
check, house charge, and credit card transactions. This is all done
in a prompt, friendly manner. The cashier performs various services
for customers, such as providing information, confirming prices,
etc. The cashier must perform all assigned tasks with sufficient
speed and accuracy to be able to deliver legendary customer
service. The cashier reports directly to the manager of the day.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Greet and verbally communicate with customers,
management, and staff both in person and by telephone. Operate all
point-of-sale equipment with sufficient speed and accuracy to avoid
placing a disproportionate burden on other employees or reducing
the level of customer service. Visually verify the contents of
carts and containers. Read and comprehend sale circulars, store
policies manuals, etc. JOB TASKS: GREETING CUSTOMERS: The cashier
greets all customers when they approach his/her checkout. Smile,
make eye contact and call the customer by name whenever possible.
It is important for the cashier to be friendly and helpful.
DIRECTING CUSTOMERS: The cashier should know the general area where
merchandise is located in the store and surrounding properties and
be able to direct customers to merchandise they are looking for.
The cashier can use the radio or paging system to direct a team
member to assist the customer. CASHIERING: The cashier uses the
P.O.S. (Point Of Sale) computer to process customers purchasing
merchandise. The methods of payment accepted are: cash, check,
credit card (MC, VISA, DISCOVER, AND AMERICAN EXPRESS), ACE's own
House Charge Accounts and the ACE Gift Card. The cashier must be
familiar with all functions of these computers and be accurate in
all forms of sales. The cashier must provide each customer with an
appropriate receipt for each transaction. STOCKING MERCHANDISE:
Occasionally, a cashier will be asked to close his/her register to
stock merchandise. He/she must be aware of the stocking policies
and procedures. When a cashier radios/pages for a back-up cashier,
the stocking cashier must respond quickly to handle the waiting
customers. The stocking cashier is expected to cover the register
for lunches, breaks, etc. GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING: The cashier will
keep the checkout area neat at all times to project a businesslike
image to the public. Posted at each checkout counter is a list of
duties to be performed daily. A cashier may also be asked to
perform housekeeping duties out on the sales floor or surrounding
properties as needed. BEING FAMILIAR WITH SALE PROMOTIONS: The
cashier must be familiar with all current sales promotions. They
are expected know where each item can be found and the starting and
ending dates of these promotions. They should also be aware of sale
items that are out of stock, limits on quantities and any
exceptions made on a particular sale promotion. WATCHING FOR
POTENTIAL SHOPLIFTERS: It is the duty of all employees to watch for
shoplifters. The cashier must be alert to customers in the store,
young and old, male and female. The cashier may radio team members
to shoppers who are unattended or who are acting suspiciously. If a
person appears to be trying to leave the store without checking
out, politely request a receipt on any merchandise they are
carrying. A manager should be advised at once if the cashier
suspects someone of shoplifting. CUSTOMER COORDINATOR: The cashier
is occasionally assigned to take a shift as customer coordinator.
The customer coordinators job is to direct shoppers to the
merchandise they are shopping for and to direct sales staff to
assist those shoppers in making their purchase. Proper training
will be given on how to perform this duty. ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
Process returned or exchanged merchandise when directed by a
manager. Maintain an adequate stock of paper, forms, bags, etc.,
required for checkout operations. Attend store meetings, training
sessions, etc., as assigned by management. Put the specified amount
of change into the register at the beginning of each business day
and/or the beginning of your shift. Assist in training new cashiers
when directed by a supervisor. Keep cashier price books up to date.
Use the paging system or radio when necessary. Maintain checkout
area merchandise displays. Return unsold and returned merchandise
to stock in the proper locations. Obtain coverage for the checkout
station if you must be temporarily absent. Notify management when
checkout equipment requires servicing. Work on special projects
when your supervisor assigns them after determining their priority
in relation to your normal tasks. Read the customers' names from
checks and charges and address them by name whenever possible.
Thank customers for shopping at our store and wish them a good day
or good evening. Be aware of security needs. Count actual
merchandise rather than relying on written ticket. Count all items
on lumber carts. Check inside all products that appear to have been
opened and between products for hidden merchandise. In addition to
the Job Tasks described previously, the cashier will be required to
perform any other duties as assigned by a member of management.
